Pickup From Tow Yards, Shops and Impounds
A car sitting at a shop or a storage lot gets released by whoever holds it, not by us. We collect from those places constantly. The only thing that slows it down is the release, which must come in writing.
The holder decides what it charges and when charging stops. That is theirs to set and not ours to argue about. What we can do is take the car off the site as soon as the release is in hand, which is usually what stops an invoice from growing any further.

What to Take Out of the Car Before Pickup
Clear the car before the truck arrives, because nothing comes back off a loaded deck. Five minutes with a bag covers almost everybody. What people lose is never valuables, it is documents and small objects in places nobody ever checks.
Registration paperwork lives in the glovebox, the toll transponder on the windshield, and loose change in the cupholder.
